How the calculation works

To add VAT, multiply the price before VAT by one plus the rate. At 15% that means multiplying by 1.15: a price of SAR 200 becomes SAR 230, of which SAR 30 is VAT.

To take VAT out of a total that already includes it, divide by the same number. SAR 230 divided by 1.15 is SAR 200, so the VAT inside the total is SAR 30. Dividing is not the same as subtracting 15% of the total, which gives a wrong answer.

Worked examples

Adding VAT to a price

A cafe sells a lunch set for SAR 100 before VAT. VAT at 15% is SAR 15.00, so the customer pays SAR 115.00.

Removing VAT from a shelf price

A shelf label shows SAR 230 including VAT. The amount before VAT is SAR 200.00 and the VAT is SAR 30.00.

Checking a supplier total

A wholesaler’s invoice total is SAR 5,750 including VAT. Dividing by 1.15 gives SAR 5,000.00 before VAT, so the VAT on the invoice should be SAR 750.00.

Good to know

  • The standard VAT rate in Saudi Arabia is 15%. Some supplies are zero-rated or exempt, so check how what you sell is treated before relying on a calculator.
  • Invoices are usually calculated line by line and then added up, so a total can differ by one halala from a single calculation on the grand total. Your invoicing system decides the official figure.
  • This tool only does arithmetic. It does not create tax invoices, and nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.

VAT calculator questions

What is the VAT rate in Saudi Arabia?

The standard rate is 15%, in force since 1 July 2020. Some supplies, such as certain exports, are taxed at 0%, and some are exempt. The rate field in this calculator can be changed if you want to test another rate.

How do I calculate VAT from a price that already includes VAT?

Divide the total by 1.15 to get the amount before VAT, then subtract that amount from the total to get the VAT. For example, SAR 115 divided by 1.15 is SAR 100, so the VAT is SAR 15.

Does this calculator issue a tax invoice?

No. It is a quick calculator for prices and totals. A valid tax invoice has to show the details the ZATCA rules require and, under e-invoicing, has to be produced by your invoicing system rather than by a calculator.

Why does my invoice total differ by a halala?

Invoicing systems usually round the VAT on each line and then add the lines, while a calculator rounds once on the grand total. The figure on the issued invoice is the one that counts.
